06 Mar 07 Red Face (LPC Code / BRL Number)

When you have been tricked, you can either get angry or you can really appreciate the cleverness of the one who tricked you. A friend of mine introduced me to this video blogger who seemed to have some very helpful information concerning day to day activities around the home and on the computer. I had never seen any videos from this guy and I trusted in what I was seeing. In the video I watched, this guy explains in detail how to speed up the delivery of your mail by adding specific digits to the back of the envelope. The only problem is that you have to ask your particular post office or mail carrier for the last three numbers.

So, being the naive fellow that I am, I asked some workers at the on-campus post office for this number…..They didn’t know what I was talking about! The postal workers kept asking, “What type of number is it?” I would respond with, “it’s the LPC code or the BRL number.” They tried to look it up in the computer, but just remained as confused as I. That is when I called my “friend”, Cheez, and he explained to me the video, “Infinite Solutions” with Mark Erickson, is hoax. So, I watched his other videos and realized my erroneous trust. I appreciate the cleverness of “Infinite Solutions”, but my face is red knowing that the whole thing was a joke. Mark Erickson is a bit nerdy, but not helpful. Check out this video on keeping your produce fresh, and be glad that I let you in on the secret. (note:the video concerning the mail is probably the most believable…well, it was for me!!!)

Great attitude, Mr. Cecil. I was driving home tonight and thought to myself how amazing it was that you were actually asking the post office about this. And that you even called to tell me about it afterwards. LOL. ROFL. Yahoo. MSN.

I totally fell for it too, not the the extent of asking some postal worker but it was truly believable! I’m amazed that I trusted a fraud, I feel like some naive imbecile with red all over my face!

[...] It’s time to come clean before anyone else tries to make a satellite dish from a salad bowl and aluminum foil. After a few humble emails from friends wrapping Ethernet cable around their cellphone and another friend calling me after going to the post office and asking them what our LPC Codes were, I thought it was time to come clean. No telling how many people try his hacks, but don’t feel bad if you are one of those people - he does a good job of throwing JUST enough real information in there to make it appear legit. But to my knowledge, Mark Erickson is actually a comedian who puts together very funny, well orchestrated, FAKE tutorials. And watching them while knowing they’re bogus just makes them all the more amazing. No telling how many people he’s fooled on Youtube. [...]

I was just about to try this BRL/LPC code thing on the back of the envelope. glad I decided to dig deeper with some internet searching before attempting to do it. I too would have probably fallen squarely flat on my face while inserting my foot into my mouth at the post office.

    Cecil,

that is a great attitude!! I was thinking to myself that people must be fooled somehow by Mark. Then I thought, hmm i wonder if people would go nuts and send hate mails or something to this guy. Glad you didn’t take the hoax/joke too serious.

Dang, I was waiting for the mailman to show up so I could ask! But this sure will be the absolute BEST to email to some friends. Kinda some payback for all the crap they email me from snopes.com that they actually believe…. (snicker)
